Expressions of interest sought

AustLII is employing new staff members. We hope to make three appointments, initially on a one year contract basis. Pending completing of formal position statements, we wish to receive expressions of interest from people who are suitably qualified for and interested in the positions described below. Expressions of interest may be in relation to more than one position.

The positions will be located primarily at AustLII's offices at the Markets Campus of the University of Technology, Sydney.

All of AustLII's current staff have qualifications in law, and computing qualifications or experience, and we expect that new appointees will be similarly qualified.

We wish to receive expressions of interest by Friday 31 July 1998.

(1) Legal inferencing project officer

The main task of this position is to conduct research and development on legal inferencing systems (knowledge-based systems or 'expert systems' in law) via the internet (see Project details). The position requires sound knowledge of all aspects of the development of databases on AustLII, and the project officer will also be involved in the development of databases relevant to the inferencing project. The position is funded primarily under an Australian Research Council large grant.

Qualifications: Tertiary qualifications in Law and Computer Science (or equivalent degree) are essential, but applicants who are near to completion of qualifications will be considered. Applicants require a sound knowledge of, and experience in the use of HTML and internet protocols. Knowledge of Unix, Perl, and any text management tools is desirable. Knowledge of and experience in the development of legal inferencing systems is desirable.

(2) Primary legal materials project officer

This position is part of the team responsible for AustLII's primary legal materials (case law and legislation) and involves particular responsibility for the development of our New South Wales databases, and in providing support for major Commonwealth databases. The Project Officer will work closely with AustLII's Manager in carrying our these tasks. The position is funded primarily by the Law Foundation of New South Wales.

Qualifications: Tertiary qualifications in Law and Computer Science (or equivalent degree) are essential, but applicants who are near to completion of qualifications will be considered. Applicants require a sound knowledge of, and experience in the use of HTML and internet protocols. Knowledge of Unix, Perl, and any text management tools is desirable.

(3) Secondary legal materials project officer

This position is part of the team responsible for AustLII's secondary legal materials (including subject-specific databases, organisational home pages), and involves the development of databases and HTML resources in a wide range of legal subject areas, which may from time to time include the following:

• Resources concerning law reform reports (under development), financial transactions reporting (AUSTRAC) and human rights (AHRIC).
• Content for AustLII's Australian and World indexes to law on the internet, and World Law Search facility.
• Other home pages and databases in AustLII's secondary legal materials.
• Support for the Reconciliation and Social Justice Library on indigenous law materials (Project details).
• Aspects of the Australian Treaties Library, and Industrial Law resources on AustLII.

Qualifications: Tertiary qualifications in Law are essential, but applicants who are near to completion of qualifications will be considered. Applicants require a sound knowledge of, and experience in, the use of HTML and internet protocols. Experience in developing internet resources, and internet design skills, are desirable. A degree in computer science is not required for this position.
